Photoshoots? Always!

I am an advocate for keeping professional pictures on hand.

Lara McDowell, owner of La La Media Company, is one of my absolute favorite photographers. Based in Cincinnati, OH. Lara is a highly skilled photographer and an incredibly kind soul.

You better pose...

I think we live in an age where everyone thinks you have to be a model or an influencer to book a photoshoot. People often don't think about a professional headshot until it is requested.

A headshot may be requested for a multitude of reasons, but nothing is worse than needing one and not having one ready to go!

"When I started my entrepreneurial journey, one of the first things I did was take some photos. I didn't know what I would use them for, but they certainly came in handy down the road."

No matter what you want to be (entrepreneur or not), you should always take yourself seriously, or no one else will. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen unprofessional headshots on flyers, LinkedIn, and presentations. It gives people pause and can make you appear to be unprofessional even if you aren't. If you're in high school you may think you don't need a headshot, but it is never too early. Internships, jobs, various organizations and clubs on college campuses may ask for one.

Work with what you got!

You may not want a drop a lot of cash on headshots which is understandable, so you may have to get creative. Here are a few ways to secure your headshots on a budget!

1. Photographer Friends

Do you have any friends who are just starting out as a photographer and looking to build their portfolio? Ask if you could be a model for them in exchange for a few of the shots. If you would like, offer them what you can. Maybe that's $50, a tank of gas, lunch, or even some coffee. I have done this!

*Be mindful of editing a photographer's work. Always ask if they will do the editing or if they would be comfortable with you editing them. Photographer's spend a lot of time on their work, so be considerate!

2. Local Events

Be mindful of various local networking events taking place. For college students especially, go to the events on campus that offer a free headshot! Yes, it may be awkward at first, but you will be so glad you have that photo. Typically all you have to do is show up, mingle a bit, and pose.

2. Self Editing

If you can't think of any events to attend or have any photographer friends, here are some tips on shooting a headshot on your own. This may be done using a camera or your smartphone.

Natural Lighting - Use natural lighting!! Even if that means waiting until it is a sunny day. Natural lighting is always the best.

Background - Be mindful of your background. If you the capability of setting a focal point, you will have a bit more flexibility when shooting. This means you can have things in the background and your camera or phone will still be able to focus on you only. You should still have a professional background.

If you aren't sure, going with a solid color background is always the safest option!

Clothing - Headshots are typically shoulders/chest up, MAYBE torso up. Be mindful of what you're wearing. I won't tell you what to wear, but make sure it aligns with your style and your industry. Be true to yourself and still professional.

Editing - Don't go crazy on the editing. There are a few free platforms you can use to edit photos like, LightRoom Classic (mobile version), most phones have editing options, and of course there's a multitude of editing apps.

There are so many ways to show up as your best self! I trust that you will put in the work and make it happen one way or another. Let me know in the comments how your photoshoot went🖤
